Abstract
Alfa Laval has been selected to provide electrolyzer cooling technology for the Onuba H2 project, a major renewable hydrogen initiative being developed by Moeve at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, Spain.
The project is part of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and is expected to become the largest electrolyzer plant in Southern Europe. The facility will initially have 300 MW of electrolysis capacity, with an option to add a further 105 MW, and is expected to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
Alfa Laval will supply heat transfer equipment covering balance-of-plant cooling, electrolyzer cooling and gas cooling. The company’s scope includes 60 heat exchangers designed to maintain optimal operating conditions throughout the hydrogen production process.
Effective cooling is critical for large-scale electrolysis, helping maintain the efficiency, reliability and safety of the equipment as renewable electricity is converted into hydrogen. Alfa Laval’s technology will therefore form an important part of the project’s supporting infrastructure.
Thomas Moller, President of Alfa Laval’s Energy Division, said the company was pleased to contribute its heat transfer expertise to a project positioned at the forefront of Europe’s energy transition. He added that the company’s solutions are intended to support the decarbonisation of industry and transport while contributing to Europe’s energy security.
The Onuba H2 project is intended to serve as an industrial anchor for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, one of Spain’s most ambitious renewable hydrogen initiatives. Its production is expected to support the decarbonisation of sectors including heavy transport and energy-intensive industry, where direct electrification can be challenging.
The European Commission has recognised the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley as a Project of Common Interest, reflecting its strategic importance to the European Union. The designation is also intended to facilitate access to public funding and accelerate development of hydrogen infrastructure supporting Europe’s energy transition and security.
With abundant renewable energy resources, established infrastructure and a strategic location, Andalusia is positioning itself as a major centre for green hydrogen production. The Onuba H2 project is expected to contribute to that development while supporting wider European efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy independence.
