BP is preparing the ground to become an important hydrogen player in Egypt, a country that has been a core upstream area for the supermajor for decades.
In a memorandum of understanding signed with the Cairo-based government, BP said it will explore the potential for establishing a green hydrogen production facility in the country.
As well as BP, signatories to the memorandum included Egypt’s New & Renewable Energy Authority, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, the General Authority for Suez Canal Economic Zone, and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt for Investment & Development.
BP will carry out several studies to evaluate the technical and commercial feasibility of developing a multi-phase, large scale green hydrogen export hub in Egypt.
These studies will assess high potential locations across Egypt “targeting best-in-class resources”, said the supermajor.
Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, BP’s head of gas and low carbon energy, said: “Egypt has world-class renewable energy resources, and we look forward to working with the government to explore how we can support its ambitious low carbon strategy.”
Nader Zaki, the supermajor’s head of Middle East & North Africa, added that the MoU “builds upon Egypt’s endeavours to be a regional energy hub and we are glad to be able to be a strategic partner to support the country’s green energy transition plans”.
