German regional utility Stadtwerke Stuttgart (SWS) said on Tuesday that it has received the green light from its supervisory board to build an electrolysis plant at the port of Stuttgart with a capacity to produce up to 1,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
The facility, called the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH2S), will be built at the Stuttgart harbour and will consist of four electrolysers with an installed capacity of up to 10 MW.
The plant will produce hydrogen exclusively from renewable electricity when there is available excess solar or wind power. The hydrogen will be delivered to consumers via a planned pipeline dubbed H2 GeNeSiS or by trailer. It will supply industry, research and development hubs as well as refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles.
Construction works are scheduled to begin in early 2025, with the facility expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
GH2S has been linked to the EU-funded H2 GeNeSiS project, which is jointly developed by SWS, Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corp (WRS), local utility Stadtwerke Esslingen, the Steinbeis Centre for Innovation in Energy-Efficient and Emission-Free Technologies (SIEET), and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW).
