Abstract

Leading companies from the transport, energy and industrial sectors are joining forces with German policymakers to accelerate the commercialisation of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty mobility and establish the ecosystem needed to scale deployment across Europe.

For the first time in Europe, Germany is bringing together the key elements required to support the large-scale deployment of hydrogen trucks by 2030, combining supportive policy frameworks, an expanding vehicle offering and an integrated hydrogen supply and infrastructure network.

Daimler Truck AG, Volvo Group, Toyota Motor Corporation, Bosch, Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, TEAL Mobility, MB Energy and other industry participants are exploring how to coordinate development across the hydrogen mobility value chain. Their shared objective is to align vehicle availability with hydrogen production, supply and strategically located refuelling infrastructure.

A central element of the initiative will be the deployment of hydrogen refuelling stations along key strategic transport corridors in Europe. The infrastructure is intended to be developed in synchronisation with the rollout of hydrogen-powered truck fleets, ensuring that customers have reliable access to fuel where it is needed.

Competitive hydrogen pricing will also be critical to the initiative. By combining suitable vehicles, strategically positioned refuelling infrastructure and dependable hydrogen supply at viable prices, the companies aim to create a competitive total cost of ownership for fleet operators.

The partners view a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem as complementary to battery-electric solutions, with hydrogen potentially playing an important role in heavy-duty applications where long distances, high payloads and demanding operating schedules require substantial range and rapid refuelling.

Coordinated investment across the entire value chain is therefore intended to provide the conditions needed for hydrogen-powered trucks to become a practical and scalable zero-emission transport solution. The companies are focusing on commercialising competitive vehicles while simultaneously developing the infrastructure and fuel supply needed to support their widespread adoption.

Further details of the planned collaboration and ecosystem will be unveiled at a CEO-led press event during IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover on 15 September.
